Our
Mission
Women's International Information Project (WIIP) is a collective organization
dedicated to expanding women's capacities for broad-based social change
by facilitating media education and access with women in grassroots
organizations.
Our History
Women's International
Information Project (WIIP) began in 1997. It grew out of a recognition
that grassroots women are being left out of the information revolution,
both locally and internationally.
What We
Do
WIIP assists women
in creating videos and web- sites that communicate their world views,
share information about their economic and social initiatives, and facilitate
political participation within their constituencies.
Who
We Work With
WIIP partners
with community-based women's organizations that are most in need of
media support because of geographical, political or financial isolation.
Upcoming
WIIP Workshops
WIIP is collaborating with indigenous women theatre
artists in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. Their organization,
FOMMA, stands for Fortaleza de la Mujer Maya, or Strength of the Mayan
Woman. The cultural exchange will take place over several years and
involve artistic collaboration on different media workshops and projects.
During 2002, the focus will be on a WiiP video workshop in Chiapas that
will culminate with FOMMA's first video production. FOMMA will then
travel to Chicago for a series of screenings, community forums, workshops
and performances. "Mediations/Mediaciones" aims to provoke dialogue
on issues particular to indigenous women as well as those pertaining
to media arts and technology access for women at the grassroots level.
This project is supported by the US Mexico Fund for Culture

Our Strategy: Workshops
and Media Training
WIIP supports
women's social change from the grassroots level, through women's community-based
organizations, by providing media workshops, media-producing equipment,
and ongoing partnership. The workshops engage a range of technologies
and skills, and utilize participatory education techniques with staff
and constituencies. The curriculum for the workshop is developed on a site-by-site
basis to meet the unique needs and goals of each organization. The following
"workshop template" provides the starting point:
A. MEDIA ANALYSIS:
Examining the representation of women's issues in local and mass media;
determining the organization's communication needs, audience, and message.
B. VIDEO PRODUCTION:
Producing a videotape to fulfill a specific communication goal of the
organization while developing technical skills and further exploring self-representation.
C. VIDEO DISTRIBUTION:
Developing and implementing a model distribution plan for the completed
video project; training in media activism.
D. WEB SITE PRODUCTION:
Producing a web site which fulfills a specific communication goal or set
of goals and supports the distribution of the completed video project.
E. ESTABLISHMENT
OF AN ONGOING MEDIA CENTER: Working with the organization in purchasing
and maintaining basic equipment that will allow the organization to continue
to produce its own videotapes, update its web site, and participate in
worldwide electronic communication.
