Chicago Area Artists of Color Join Forces to Raise over $13,000 for Beyondmedia Art-in-Education Collaboration with Gale Community Academy in Rogers Park

Despite winter storm, community arts reception a triumph!

On Saturday, January 22, from 6:00 - 10:00 pm CST, the Third Annual Who Stole the Soul? community arts reception was held at the McCormick Lounge on Loyola University's Lakeshore campus. Despite heavy snow and strong winds, which forced the closure of Lakeshore Drive earlier that evening, over 90 guests attended the event and experienced the creative talents of over 12 Chicago area artist of color.

Proceeds from the event will make possible a collaborative art-in-education project between Gale Community Academy in Rogers Park and Beyondmedia Education.

We have been talking with teachers and administrators at Gale for more than two years, envisioning a project where students would learn media literacy skills that would equip them to critique representations of violence and produce their own anti-violence media campaign. The big obstacle has been the lack of money to get it off the ground. Now, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Who Stole the Soul? supporters and their belief in the arts as a unique force for transformation, this collaboration will finally take place.
Salome Chasnoff, Executive Director Beyondmedia Education - 2005 Who Stole the Soul beneficiary.

Who Stole the Soul? community arts reception showcased the artistic talents of emerging and established artists of color. This group exhibition featured a variety of expressive art forms including drawing, painting, sculpture, live jazz, dance, and spoken word performance. 2005 participating artists included:
  • Visual artists Moses X. Ball, Ra Joy, Damon Lamar Reed, Duhirwe Rushemeza, and Myah Smith
  • Musical performance by keyboardist Jean-Paul Coffy, guitarist Mo'tep, and jazz saxophonist D-Erania
  • Spoken word performances by poets Wisdom, Miles and Ebony Joy
  • Drum and dance performances by Soul Creations Inc. and Tamboula Ethnic Dance Company

Proceeds from the event will be used to support a collaborative arts-in-education project between Gale Community Academy in Rogers Park and Beyondmedia Education, a nonprofit media arts organization. The project will provide creative opportunities for underserved students to develop media/technology skills, and produce anti-violence media for community distribution.
